The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has voiced serious concerns regarding new Israeli regulations that mandate international journalists to secure prior approval from the military censor before reporting on combat zones or missile impact sites within Israel. Sara Qudah, the CPJ Regional Director, criticized these measures, highlighting the detrimental effects on press freedom and the global community's right to an unobstructed reality of events. Similarly, the Union of Journalists in Israel and opposition leader Yair Lapid have openly condemned the directives. Lapid emphasized the challenges of enforcing such rules in an age where smartphone usage is widespread.

The directives also extend to social media, with an order from June 18 requiring any posts regarding the aftermath of attacks to receive prior military approval. This sweeping rule was communicated by Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, emphasizing that these measures are essential for maintaining order and security during wartime.

The Foreign Press Association has also raised alarms about an unprecedented prohibition that prevents foreign journalists from accessing Gaza, severely impacting independent reporting efforts. Enforcement of these rules has already commenced, with instances of police seizing equipment and obstructing journalists documented in cities like Beersheba, Holon, and Ramat Gan.

Adding to the controversy, recent police actions in Haifa involved raiding a hotel, seizing equipment from Palestinian journalists, and initiating investigations. These aggressive enforcement tactics have sparked further outcry among international journalism communities, with the CPJ reporting the deaths of approximately 185 journalists in Palestinian territories since October 2023 due to these and other confrontations.

These stringent censorship efforts by Israel have been met with international criticism, with various organizations highlighting the erosion of press freedoms in the region. The CPJ continues to monitor these developments closely, alongside other global press freedom concerns.
