Biglaw Firm Hosts Sensory-Friendly Fireworks for Families with Special Needs

In an inspiring blend of corporate resources and community service, the Columbus office of Barnes & Thornburg, ranked No. 73 on the Am Law 100 with a gross revenue of $747,226,000 in 2024, is offering a unique Independence Day celebration tailored to children with sensory processing issues. This initiative leverages their prime 33rd-floor office space to provide a comfortable environment for viewing the city's famed Red, White and BOOM! fireworks display.

Partner at the firm and chair of the Childhood League Center's board, Katrina Thompson, is spearheading this special event. Her personal connection through her daughter, who has autism, fuels her commitment to inclusivity. "We’ve got air conditioning, a little temperature control, there’s restrooms, handicap accessible restrooms that people can use," Thompson explained to NBC4 WCMH-TV. She highlighted the challenges large crowds and loud noises present during traditional celebrations which can sideline families like hers.

The event not only promises a stunning view of the fireworks but also includes food, games, activities, and critical amenities like a quiet room and controlled radio volume to minimize overstimulation. "This is often a stressful time for families with autism or sensory issues,” Thompson noted. “So I like to have this event to really bring the families together to experience and hopefully have a core memory around Red, White and BOOM!”

This initiative by Barnes & Thornburg stands out as a beacon of how corporate entities can utilize their assets and influence to foster inclusivity and joy for those who might otherwise miss out on celebrating national festivities. Congratulations to the Columbus office for creating an environment where Independence Day is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
