The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) reached a significant settlement this Tuesday, resolving a lawsuit initiated by a Jewish faculty member and several students. The lawsuit, filed in June 2024, accused the university of allowing a hostile environment where Jewish individuals were barred from accessing central campus areas by pro-Palestinian protesters. According to the claims, these protesters required wristbands or similar identifiers that singled out individuals loyal to their cause, effectively segregating those who did not disavow their connection to Israel.

The settlement agreement, which totals $6.45 million, earmarks $6.13 million specifically for the plaintiffs and initiatives to counteract antisemitism. Each of the four plaintiffs will receive $50,000, and an additional $2.33 million is allocated for charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations dedicated to fighting antisemitism. The remainder will cover legal fees and other related costs.

Both parties have expressed satisfaction with the settlement's terms, highlighting it as a step forward in addressing discrimination based on religion and beliefs. This resolution comes after significant legal proceedings, where in August of the previous year, Judge Mark Scarsi granted a preliminary injunction favoring the plaintiffs. He emphasized the ongoing risk of exclusion based on sincerely held religious beliefs and the university’s responsibility to ensure equal access to its programs and facilities.

Judge Scarsi’s ruling underscored the potential for "irreparable injury" if the university did not act to prevent the exclusion of Jewish students from campus activities and areas. The injunction mandated that UCLA must withhold ordinarily available programs and campus areas from all students if they become inaccessible to Jewish students due to their religious beliefs.
