Major Biglaw Firm Crowell & Moring Acquires Over 40 Lawyers from Reed Smith in Strategic Lateral Move

In a bold maneuver within the legal industry, Crowell & Moring has significantly bolstered its ranks by securing a 40-strong lawyer team from competitor Reed Smith. This group, including 16 partners, marks a significant expansion for Crowell & Moring, particularly enhancing its healthcare litigation practice across various national offices.

Earlier today, details emerged from the National Law Journal about this massive recruitment. The move not only enlarges Crowell & Moring's healthcare group but also sets the stage for establishing what they call the "premier health practice in the country." Among the notable transfers are [Martin] Bishop, who will co-chair Crowell’s health care group in the Chicago office, joined by partners Steven Hamilton, Rebecca Hanson, Thomas Hardy, Daniel Hofmeister, Alexandra Lucas, Jason Mayer, Kevin Tessier, and Bryan Webster.

Additional partners including Michelle Cheng, Lorenzo Gasparetti, Junga Kim, Amir Shlesinger, and Kenneth Smersfelt will enhance the firm’s Los Angeles team, and Karen Braje will be stationed in San Francisco. Scott Williams finds his new professional home in Dallas, a strategic location where Crowell is currently establishing a new office.

Crowell's chair, Phil Inglima, expressed enthusiasm about the move, highlighting it as a significant opportunity to advance in the market. He emphasized the potential to vastly improve client services with these new additions. Following this strategic expansion, Crowell’s healthcare practice will encompass a robust team of 100 lawyers.

Martin Bishop shared insights with the National Law Journal, reflecting on the relationships and competitive history between the two firms. He remarked on the realization that combining forces would most effectively serve their client bases, indicating a strategic and client-centered rationale behind the move.

This strategic expansion by Crowell & Moring not only intensifies the competition within Biglaw but also reshapes the landscape of healthcare litigation services offered by top law firms in the United States. Congratulations to Crowell & Moring on their successful integration of new talent, and best of luck to the team as they navigate this exciting phase of growth.
