Just over a year after his sudden resignation, former federal judge Joshua Kindred, appointed by President Trump to the District of Alaska, is in the throes of a major legal and ethical scandal. The Alaska Bar Association's Disciplinary Board has recommended his disbarment following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and dishonesty.

The controversy began when Kindred abruptly left his position only four years into what was supposed to be a lifetime appointment. It didn't take long for the public to learn the reasons behind his departure were far from benign. A Special Committee from the Ninth Circuit was tasked with investigating multiple ethics complaints against Kindred. Their findings were damning.

The report highlighted that Kindred had created a sexually charged atmosphere in his chambers, engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a law clerk and fostering a hostile work environment for others. More troubling were the details involving an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Karen Vandergaw. Vandergaw admitted to sending Kindred nude photographs under pressure, while she continued to appear before him in court, raising questions about judicial impartiality and integrity.

The Disciplinary Board found Kindred guilty of violating three Alaska Rules of Professional Conduct. Two of these violations were related to making false statements during the investigation into his conduct, and one pertained to the sexual harassment allegations.
