Rights Group Demands Investigation into Protest Deaths as Indonesia Faces Civil Unrest

Amnesty International has called on Indonesian authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the deaths of at least eight individuals, casualties of a forceful crackdown during widespread protests that erupted across the nation on August 25. The protests were a public outcry against low wages, recent tax hikes, and salary increases for lawmakers, triggering massive demonstrations and violent encounters.

Last week, thousands of Indonesians flooded the streets in major cities, including the capital, Jakarta. The demonstrations escalated quickly, with protestors setting fires to regional government buildings and clashing violently with security forces. The police's response to the unrest involved the use of tear gas and water cannons, and there were multiple reports of excessive force. One particularly grievous incident involved a ride-share driver who died after being hit by an armored police vehicle.

In light of the escalating violence, President Prabowo Subianto scrapped a scheduled diplomatic visit to China, choosing instead to remain in Indonesia to address the crisis directly. The government has acknowledged the fatalities linked to the protests. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, extended his condolences to the victims' families and reiterated the government's commitment to restoring order and safeguarding civilians by deploying additional police officers.

Amnesty International emphasized the need for "prompt, independent, and impartial investigations" into the deaths and violent incidents, insisting on accountability and fair trials for those found responsible. The organization highlighted Indonesia's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the country has ratified. This international treaty upholds the right to life and the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. Failure to observe these rights could subject Indonesia to international scrutiny and potential sanctions through United Nations mechanisms.

As the nation grapples with these internal conflicts, the international community watches closely, awaiting actions that will align with the government's commitments to human rights and justice for all its citizens.
