Texas Attorney Faces Federal Charges for Cyberstalking and Threatening Biglaw Professionals

In a disturbing turn of events, Texas attorney Fangzhou Chen, also known as Amber Chen, has been formally charged with cyberstalking and sending threatening communications. According to federal authorities, Chen engaged in a relentless online harassment campaign targeting a Biglaw partner in New York and an associate in Los Angeles, neither of whom she had met in person.

The allegations against Chen include sending 25 baseless tips to the FBI National Threat Operations Center, which painted a dire picture of her intentions. Her messages were filled with ominous threats and bizarre claims, such as asserting that the targeted New York partner's firm, reportedly Latham & Watkins, would lose half its clients if he did not resign. Moreover, Chen's social media activity prompted the firm to implement round-the-clock security to protect the harassed individuals.

The severity of the threats escalated over time. Documents from the case reveal that Chen threatened to expose personal files, warned of immediate physical harm using firearms, and ominously referenced sniper tactics. Her communications also included disturbing remarks such as suggesting a real-life version of the deadly game portrayed in the popular series "Squid Game."

The situation reached a tipping point with emails addressed to the New York partner's professional account, where Chen issued a "last warning" for him to leave the United States, coupled with a direct threat of elimination if he was spotted at the firm again.

The motive behind Chen's actions remains unclear, especially given that she has never been employed at Latham & Watkins, despite claims to the contrary on her office website listed with the State Bar of Texas.

This case underscores the increasingly serious nature of online harassment in the legal profession and the broader implications it holds for personal security and workplace safety. The legal community will be watching closely as this case progresses through the federal court system.
