The sanctions have been imposed amidst deteriorating UK-Georgia relations following the ascendancy of the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party. The UK's decision reflects growing concerns over Georgia's political trajectory, where recent legislation and government actions mimic Kremlin policies, including the suppression of dissent and the jailing of opposition leaders.

Two prominent Georgian businessmen, Levan Vasadze and Otar Partskhaladze, are at the forefront of the UK's latest sanctions. Partskhaladze, previously sanctioned by the US, is reputedly connected to oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili and accused by the US of acting on behalf of the Russian FSB to sway Georgian politics. Despite his denials and claims of being uninvolved in politics for a decade, his influence remains a point of contention.

Levan Vasadze, a media mogul, allegedly uses his platforms to disseminate pro-Russian propaganda while promoting far-right nationalism. Additionally, the UK has sanctioned two vessels, BAVLY and KARAKUZ, identified as part of Russia's "shadow fleet" used to circumvent sanctions by transporting Russian oil to countries like India and China.
