In a significant display of unity, the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and European Union (EU) have collectively issued a statement reaffirming their dedication to international legal standards. This announcement came amid concerns over the increasing global disregard for established legal frameworks. The declaration was made at the UN Headquarters during the 80th session of the General Assembly.
The tripartite group strongly condemned the mounting instances where international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights law, have been neglected. They underscored the importance of strict adherence to the UN Charter, which serves as the core legal instrument governing international relations.
The joint statement emphasized the need for coordinated enforcement of Security Council mandates, highlighting the support for UN Security Council Resolution 2773. This resolution, adopted in February, denounces the M23 rebel movement’s military actions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It demands an immediate cessation of hostilities by M23 and calls for Rwanda to cease its support of the movement and withdraw its forces from Congolese territories.
Additionally, the statement supports ongoing efforts under UN Security Council Resolution 2719, adopted in 2023. Resolution 2719 facilitates the UN's financial support for AU peacekeeping missions, covering up to 75 percent of the costs on a case-by-case basis, using funds from UN member countries.
This partnership among the UN, AU, and EU illustrates a committed effort to uphold international law during a period when many fear these standards are being sidelined. The alliance aims to fortify the rule of law and encourages nations to engage with established international institutions, ensuring that global governance remains strong and effective in the face of challenges.
The reaffirmation by these major international bodies highlights a crucial stand against the erosion of legal norms and seeks to inspire a renewed commitment to the principles of international law globally.
