Legal Luminary and Former Paul Weiss Chair Alfred Youngwood Passes Away at 87

We regret to announce the passing of Alfred Youngwood, the esteemed former chair of the Am Law 100 firm Paul Weiss. Youngwood, who had a remarkable career spanning over four decades at the firm, died at the age of 87. His death marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of one of the nation's most respected legal institutions.

Alfred Youngwood joined Paul Weiss in 1964 after completing a clerkship in the Southern District of New York. Known for his sharp intellect and legal acumen, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a partner in 1970. His specialty in tax law not only won him accolades but also helped solidify the firm's reputation in this complex field.

In 1999, Youngwood achieved another milestone when he was elected as the firm's first democratically chosen chair, a position he held with distinction for about a decade. Under his leadership, Paul Weiss not only soared to new heights of profitability but also strengthened its commitment to pro bono work, diversity, and the development of its associates.

Brad Karp, the current chair of Paul Weiss, remembered Youngwood not only as a mentor but as a pillar of the legal community. In a firmwide email, Karp expressed his deep admiration and respect for Youngwood, saying, "In my May 2008 remarks upon being elected to succeed Alfred, I told my partners that I was following in the footsteps of towering giants who loved our firm and that Alfred Youngwood was at the top of that list."

Karp also highlighted Youngwood's significant contributions to the firm’s culture and success, noting, "Not only did Paul, Weiss become one of the most profitable law firms in the country during Alfred’s decade as chairman, but our culture and dedication to pro bono work, diversity, and associate development all flourished as well."

Described by colleagues as "brilliant, endlessly creative, and a dogged problem-solver," Youngwood's legacy is not just in the legal strategies he crafted but also in the generational leadership he mentored, which continues to shape Paul Weiss today.

The legal community and all who knew Alfred Youngwood mourn the loss of a truly distinguished figure. His dedication to the law and the people around him set a benchmark that will be revered for many years to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
