UN High Commissioner Calls for Open Participation in Guinea's December Elections

In a firm stance for democracy, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called upon the Guinean authorities to lift bans on opposition parties and media outlets to ensure a fair and inclusive electoral process in the upcoming December elections. This appeal was made amidst a tense political climate following the approval of a new constitution that potentially extends the junta leader’s power.

Türk emphasized the importance of adhering to international human rights norms, stating, "It is critical for the transitional authorities to ensure that processes towards restoring constitutional rule are conducted in line with international human rights norms and standards, including on public participation, inclusiveness, and transparency […] The military authorities in Guinea must first and foremost lift the unacceptable bans on political parties and media outlets."

The newly approved constitution, which allows junta leader Mamady Doumbouya to run for office while extending the presidential mandate from five to seven years, renewable twice, has sparked international concern. Since seizing power in a 2021 coup, Doumbouya's regime has been met with a mixture of initial approval and growing apprehension regarding its authoritarian direction.

The opposition in Guinea, notably silenced under current restrictions, has voiced serious concerns. Abdoulaye Kourouma, head of the Rally for Renaissance and Development party, highlighted the oppressive atmosphere, saying, "Whether you are a scientist, a university scholar, an opinion leader, a journalist, no one speaks today."

Since May 2022, Guinea has seen a prohibition on political gatherings and peaceful demonstrations, contravening international law and basic human rights to freedom of speech, press, and association. Leading up to the referendum vote, three major opposition parties were banned, and various media outlets were suspended, signaling an alarming trend of rights violations.

The international community remains watchful as the situation in Guinea unfolds, hoping that the authorities will heed the UN High Commissioner’s calls for transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process. With the December elections on the horizon, the world watches to see if Guinea will take steps towards democratic norms or continue down a path of restrictive governance.
