Slovenia Enforces Travel Ban on Israeli PM Netanyahu Amid War Crime Allegations

In a bold diplomatic move, Slovenia has declared a travel ban on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marking a significant escalation in EU-Israel relations. This decision, announced on Thursday, reinforces Slovenia's previous sanctions against Israeli officials and aligns with international legal actions.

Neva Grasic, Secretary of State at Slovenia's Foreign Ministry, highlighted on social media platform X that this ban is part of ongoing legal proceedings against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. She referenced a July 19, 2024, ruling from the International Court of Justice, which found certain Israeli policies in violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.

The Slovenian government emphasized that this measure reinforces its dedication to upholding international law and human rights. "This decision sends a clear message to the state of Israel that Slovenia expects consistent respect for the decisions of international courts," the statement read. This stance is consistent with Slovenia's previous actions, including the recognition of Palestine as a state in June 2024, and imposing an arms embargo on Israel in July 2025.

Furthermore, Slovenia banned travel for Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich in 2025, citing their "genocidal statements" and incitement of violence against Palestinians. As a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Slovenia is also committed to enforcing ICC arrest warrants, which include orders for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

In a related diplomatic stance, Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon announced that Slovenia's delegation will not attend Netanyahu's upcoming speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

This series of measures by Slovenia underscores its firm commitment to international legal standards and its active role in global human rights advocacy.
