Several prominent human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Access Now, have collectively issued a stern letter to Microsoft, urging the tech giant to suspend its business dealings with the Israeli military and government. This demand follows allegations that Microsoft's technology is being used to facilitate human rights abuses.

The public release of the letter on Friday echoed concerns that Israeli authorities are utilizing advanced surveillance technology to oppress Palestinians. Notably, an investigation by The Guardian, Local Call, and +972 Magazine revealed that the Israeli military’s Unit 8200 employs Microsoft Azure to collect and store extensive data from Palestinian mobile phone communications in Gaza and the West Bank. This technology reportedly enables the execution of airstrikes and influences military strategies in these areas.

The investigation further highlighted that these surveillance capabilities are not limited to military objectives but also involve intercepting conversations of ordinary citizens. This information has allegedly been used for coercive measures such as blackmail, detention, or even justifying killings post-factum, according to Human Rights Watch.

In response to these findings, Microsoft took immediate action by disabling certain services for the Israel Ministry of Defense. The company emphasized their commitment to ensuring that their technologies are not employed for mass surveillance or targeting civilians. A spokesperson from Microsoft clarified that the company had been unaware of any misuse of its services for monitoring civilians and that they had no knowledge about the specifics of the data stored by Unit 8200 in their cloud systems.

Deborah Brown from Human Rights Watch highlighted Microsoft's initial steps to limit the use of its technologies by certain Israeli military units. She stressed the importance of Microsoft undertaking a comprehensive review of its business relationships with Israeli authorities to prevent any complicity in serious human rights violations.

The human rights groups' letter to Microsoft concluded with a series of questions, seeking further investigations and actions from the tech company, with a deadline for responses set for the end of October.
