Qatar Calls for Calm as Tensions Escalate Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

In the wake of a deadly border clash, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to adopt a more restrained approach and engage in dialogue. The call for peace comes after a violent incident that resulted in the deaths of 23 Pakistani troops and injuries to 29 others, according to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The conflict reportedly began when the Afghan Taliban and associated militants initiated attacks from the Afghan side of the border. In response, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, condemned the actions as unwarranted aggression and stated that Pakistan's military response targeted only Taliban infrastructure and terrorist factions, not civilians. Dar emphasized the need for the Taliban government to act against terrorists operating from Afghan soil to prevent further deterioration of bilateral relations.

Conversely, Hamdullah Fitrat, Deputy Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, accused certain elements within the Pakistani military of destabilizing the region and blamed them for a series of security breaches, including airspace violations and misinformation campaigns. Fitrat's statement highlighted Afghanistan's commitment to safeguarding its borders and airspace while criticizing Pakistan for alleged provocations.

The United Nations has also weighed in on the conflict, with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi expressing deep concern over the potential humanitarian impact of increased border tensions. Grandi called for immediate de-escalation to protect vulnerable populations and maintain regional stability.

The backdrop to these tensions is the contentious Durand Line, a border established in 1893 that has never been recognized by any Afghan government. This longstanding dispute has frequently resulted in territorial skirmishes. Furthermore, Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban of providing refuge to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a claim that has exacerbated hostilities and led to severe military and diplomatic confrontations.

As the situation remains volatile, the international community watches closely, hoping that diplomatic efforts will prevail over further military escalation.
