In a landmark announcement, US President Donald Trump declared the end of the Gaza war and the imminent release of 20 Israeli hostages from two years of captivity. Speaking to Israel's legislature on Monday, Trump proclaimed, "After two harrowing years in darkness and captivity, 20 courageous hostages are returning to the glorious embrace of their families...and today, the sun rises on a Holy Land that is finally at peace."
The peace deal, approved last Friday by Israel’s Cabinet following Trump's proposal, called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages held by Hamas. In a significant gesture of reconciliation, Israel has freed over 1,900 prisoners as part of the agreement. To ensure the deal's enforcement, about 200 US troops will join a larger international team in Israel, with further plans by Trump to assist in Gaza's reconstruction.
Videos shared by the White House showcase emotional reunions of several hostages with the Israeli Defense Forces, marking their safe return. However, the peace agreement also presents unresolved issues, notably the disarmament of Hamas and the future governance of Gaza.
President Trump is currently in Egypt attending a "Summit for Peace" with global leaders from Turkey, Jordan, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, the United Nations, and the European Union, aiming to solidify the nascent peace.
Despite the optimistic breakthrough, tensions remain. Both Hamas and Israel recognize the challenges ahead, particularly in recovering bodies within the stipulated three-day period as per the agreement. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed frustration over perceived delays by Gaza, stating on X, "The urgent mission to which we are all committed now is to ensure the return of all the abducted bodies home. Hamas’s announcement about the expected return of 4 bodies today is a failure to meet commitments. Any delay or deliberate avoidance will be considered a gross violation of the agreement and will be responded to accordingly."
In a reciprocal move, Israel is set to hand over the remains of at least 45 Palestinians. This exchange underscores the complex and delicate nature of the peace process, highlighting both progress and the long road ahead in healing the deep wounds left by nearly two years of conflict.
