In a somber development highlighting the volatile aftermath of the Gaza ceasefire, Saleh Aljafarawi, a 28-year-old Palestinian freelance journalist known for his poignant war coverage on social media, was fatally shot on October 12 in Gaza City. This incident occurred just days after a ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas, aiming to halt the longstanding conflict.
Aljafarawi was reporting in the Sabra neighborhood when he was caught in the crossfire during overnight clashes. According to his father, armed individuals linked with the Israeli military were responsible for his death. Aljafarawi, who was wearing a press-marked vest and helmet at the time, was reportedly targeted while covering a confrontation between local security forces and armed gangs. Verified footage later showed his body being transported in a truck, marking a grim end to his reporting career.
The ceasefire, which commenced on October 10, included terms for Israel's military redeployment from key areas in Gaza, a phased release of hostages and Palestinian detainees, and an increase in humanitarian aid and movement. However, the pullback has led to security vacuums and subsequent clashes, particularly between Hamas security units and groups such as the Doghmush clan and militia led by Yasser Abu-Shabab, resulting in numerous casualties.
The situation has been further complicated by allegations of external involvement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged in June that certain local clans had been "activated" against Hamas based on security advisories. Additionally, there are claims from Palestinian media that Abu-Shabab’s militia received Israeli support.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has pointed out that this period has been one of the deadliest for journalists in the region since records began in 1992. Recent attacks include the August strike at Nasser Hospital and a separate incident near al-Shifa Hospital, both resulting in multiple journalist fatalities. The UN has called for independent criminal investigations into these acts, demanding accountability for the perpetrators.
Following Aljafarawi’s death, the Foreign Press Association has reiterated calls for Israel to allow international media free access to Gaza. The situation for local journalists like Aljafarawi has become increasingly perilous, with incidents such as the deletion of his Instagram account by Meta, which had over 4.5 million followers, drawing sharp criticism and highlighting the challenges faced by Palestinian reporters.
CPJ emphasized the critical need for protection of journalists in Gaza, stating, “Saleh Aljafarawi’s killing highlights the ongoing dangers journalists in Gaza face, even after a ceasefire.” The organization has urged all parties and armed groups in the area to ensure the safety of the press and allow for transparent reporting on the situation.
