UN Condemns Coup in Madagascar, Calls for Immediate Restoration of Constitutional Rule

The United Nations has issued a strong condemnation of the recent military coup in Madagascar, which saw the displacement of President Andry Rajoelina by the elite army unit CAPSAT. In a decisive statement released Thursday, the global body called for the swift reinstatement of constitutional governance and rule of law in the island nation.

Following weeks of political unrest driven by Gen Z-led protests against Rajoelina's administration, dissatisfaction culminated in a military takeover. The protestors voiced their frustration over ongoing issues such as severe poverty, lack of basic utilities, and limited economic opportunities. The Secretary General of the UN has urged all parties involved to address these underlying issues collectively, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to assisting Madagascar in regaining national stability.

Col. Michael Randrianirina has been installed as the new leader following the coup. Despite his promises to organize elections within the next two years, the international community remains wary. The recent political upheavals come on the heels of Rajoelina dissolving the government amidst escalating violence in September, which ultimately led to his fleeing the country last week.

The UN’s critique extends beyond the political disruption, shedding light on the dire humanitarian situation in Madagascar. The island is currently grappling with extreme hunger and a malaria outbreak, challenges that are intensified by the insufficient funding of UN relief efforts. According to UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, “The Secretary-General condemns the unconstitutional change of government in Madagascar and calls for the return to constitutional order and the rule of law.”

With the international community's eyes on Madagascar, the unfolding situation underscores the critical need for stability, dialogue, and effective governance to address both the political and humanitarian crises at hand. The promise of future elections offers a glimmer of hope, but the path forward remains fraught with complexity and uncertainty.
