UN Calls for Restraint and Accountability as Violence Escalates in Cameroon Following Elections

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has voiced serious concerns over the outbreak of violent protests in Cameroon after the presidential election results were declared on October 12. The OHCHR is urging the nation's security forces to adhere to international human rights standards by avoiding the use of lethal force to suppress demonstrations.

In their statement, the OHCHR emphasized the need for Cameroon's authorities to engage in peaceful methods first, according to the [UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force by Law Enforcement Officials](https://www.ohchr.org/en/instruments-mechanisms/instruments/basic-principles-use-force-and-firearms-law-enforcement). These guidelines advocate for the necessity and proportionality of force, and stress precautionary measures to minimize harm and injury.

The situation escalated when the Constitutional Council announced the re-election of President Paul Biya, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and claims of electoral fraud by the opposition. The opposition leader, Issa Tchirola Bakary, declared himself the rightful winner, prompting his supporters and thousands of citizens to take to the streets in protest. The peaceful protests quickly turned into violent confrontations with the security forces, resulting in several fatalities and numerous arrests.

The OHCHR has also called upon Cameroon's political leaders to avoid incendiary language and actions that could incite further violence. They have stressed the importance of conducting independent and thorough investigations into the incidents of violence surrounding the protests. This is critical not only to hold those responsible accountable but also to uphold the rule of law and prevent further abuses.

Cameroon has been facing a complex crisis with ongoing armed conflict in several regions, where both government forces and separatist groups have been implicated in human rights violations. The current electoral unrest complicates an already volatile situation, threatening to plunge the nation into deeper conflict.

The international community, along with local rights groups, continues to monitor the situation closely. They urge all involved to seek peaceful resolutions and respect the democratic processes to ensure the stability and security of Cameroon and its people.
