On a chilling October evening in 2024, the lifeless body of Caitlin Tracey was discovered in the stairwell of a South Loop apartment complex in Chicago, a gruesome scene that ended with her severed foot found nearby. The victim was the estranged wife of Adam P. Beckerink, a former tax partner at the prestigious law firm Duane Morris. Exactly one year after the tragic incident, Cook County prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for Beckerink, accusing him of fatally throwing Tracey over the stairwell railing, resulting in her falling 24 floors to her death.
This case has drawn attention not only for its horrific details but also for the subsequent legal actions involving Beckerink. Following the discovery of Tracey’s remains, allegations of domestic abuse surfaced, leading to Beckerink's removal from his firm. Duane Morris issued a statement expressing shock and extending condolences to Tracey’s family, emphasizing their swift action to disassociate from Beckerink once the allegations were substantiated.
Earlier this summer, the legal saga continued as Beckerink pleaded no contest to charges of domestic abuse and interfering with a 911 call made by Tracey. Furthermore, he admitted guilt to a contempt of court charge for violating a no-contact order. These charges stemmed from an incident in 2024, just two months before Tracey’s tragic death. Currently, Beckerink is serving a three-month sentence in a Michigan jail.
During the sentencing, Tracey’s family delivered a poignant victim impact statement. Monica Tracey, Caitlin's mother, expressed the deep loss and ongoing pain the family endures, describing the defendant as a "brute" who overpowered their daughter, who stood at just 4’11” and weighed 103 pounds. “Instead of meeting our daughter for dinner, my husband and I visit her grave,” Monica Tracey lamented. She stressed that there is no justice that can mend their heartbreak or bring back their daughter.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence. Victims of such abuse are urged to seek help and are reminded that immediate assistance can be accessed through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), available in both English and Spanish.
As this case progresses to trial, it remains a significant point of discussion regarding domestic violence awareness and the responsibilities of professional firms in handling allegations against their members.
