Germany, Jordan, and the UK Demand Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan Amid Humanitarian Crisis

In a united call for peace, the foreign ministers of Germany, Jordan, and the UK have demanded an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation that has escalated into what is described as an "apocalyptic" crisis. This plea came during the First Plenary Session of the Manama Dialogue 2025, emphasizing the urgency of halting the ongoing violence, particularly in the war-torn region of Darfur.

The capture of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to an increase in civilian casualties and intensified the crisis. UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Yvette Cooper conveyed the gravity of the situation, labeling the current state of Sudan as one of despair, marred by atrocities including mass executions, starvation, and gender-based violence, which she termed as the "largest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century."

Cooper criticized the international community's inaction, particularly pointing out Russia’s veto of UN Security Council resolutions that would have facilitated humanitarian access to the region. Echoing her concerns, Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi highlighted the global silence surrounding the conflict in Sudan, which has only exacerbated the situation.

The situation is further complicated by reports from the UN Human Rights Office and other sources indicating that the conflict in Sudan, fueled by ethnic and cultural hate speech, has been aggravated by external factors such as alleged arms supplies from the UAE to the RSF. Despite the International Court of Justice dismissing Sudan's case against the UAE for lack of jurisdiction, the implications of such actions continue to raise concerns among international observers.

The urgent appeal for a ceasefire follows a previous call by UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, emphasizing the critical situation in El Fasher. Since the conflict erupted in April 2023 due to a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, Sudan has experienced catastrophic humanitarian conditions, including widespread displacement, famine, and an alarming number of civilian casualties, with reports stating at least 3,384 civilians killed in the first half of 2025 alone.

As the international community watches closely, the joint statement by Germany, Jordan, and the UK is a crucial step in rallying global efforts to address and hopefully resolve the devastating impacts of the conflict in Sudan.
