Press Group Calls for Action After Journalist Attacked During Protest in Spain

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has issued a strong appeal to Spanish authorities demanding a thorough investigation into the assault on journalist José Ismael Martínez. The incident unfolded amidst violent clashes between police and far-left demonstrators in Pamplona on October 30, 2025. CPJ's call underscores the urgent need to bring the assailants to justice and to bolster protections for journalists reporting in volatile environments.

Martínez, who was covering the protest for the online newspaper El Español, found himself encircled and attacked by several masked individuals. Despite wearing his press identification prominently, he was subjected to a barrage of objects before being physically assaulted. The altercation resulted in significant eye injuries, necessitating emergency medical attention, details of which Martínez later recounted in his publication.

The demonstration that turned violent was sparked by the presence of Vito Quiles, a controversial far-right activist, at the University of Navarra. Quiles, known for his provocative public engagements, has drawn inspiration from late American activist Charlie Kirk. The event was preemptively canceled due to security concerns, a decision subsequently explained by a University professor on X, emphasizing the institution's educational mission devoid of political activism. Nevertheless, the gathering escalated, resulting in arrests and injuries among the police force.

In the wake of the incident, the Spanish University of La Laguna also canceled a scheduled event featuring Quiles, citing a commitment to maintaining the campus as a forum for respectful academic discourse and the exchange of ideas within the framework of human rights and accurate information.

The assault on Martínez is not just a matter of national concern but touches on broader issues of press freedom and safety, fundamental under the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights. These incidents highlight ongoing risks journalists face, challenging their ability to operate freely and without fear of violence in tumultuous settings.

As the investigation proceeds, the global community watches closely, awaiting decisive action from Spanish authorities to affirm their commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists.
