Press Group Demands Protection for Indian Journalist Rana Ayyub Amid Threats

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on Indian authorities to ensure the safety of Rana Ayyub, a Washington Post columnist and investigative journalist, after she received threats from an unidentified caller. The caller, who seemed to be aware of her home address, harassed Ayyub with demands and threats over the phone.

Kunal Majumder, CPJ's India representative, expressed grave concerns about the threats directed at Ayyub and her father from an international number. "Authorities must act swiftly to identify and hold accountable those responsible and ensure the safety of all journalists in India so they can work without fear of intimidation or violence," Majumder stated.

According to a police complaint filed by Ayyub on November 3, she had received multiple WhatsApp calls and messages from an unknown international number the previous day. The caller coerced her to write about the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, threatening violence against her and her father if she did not comply. The caller's profile picture allegedly resembled imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, though this has not been independently verified by CPJ.

In response to the threats, police have been stationed at Ayyub’s residence for her protection. While Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe has not commented, Senior Inspector Umesh Gawli confirmed that they are recording Ayyub's statement.

This is not the first time Ayyub has faced danger and harassment. Her personal information was leaked online last year, leading to ongoing harassment, trolling, and legal intimidation for her reporting efforts. Moreover, earlier this year, the Delhi High Court mandated the registration of an FIR against her for allegedly insulting Hindu deities. UN human rights experts have repeatedly called on India to cease the threats and judicial harassment targeting her.

The safety of journalists remains a pressing concern in India, where freedom of the press is crucial yet frequently under threat. CPJ's latest request underscores the need for immediate and effective measures to protect journalists and uphold the integrity of press freedom in the country.
