Wilkinson Stekloff Shakes Up Biglaw Bonus Season with Unprecedented Associate Payouts

In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves through the legal industry, D.C.-based litigation boutique Wilkinson Stekloff has announced year-end associate bonuses that not only surpass but significantly dwarf the established market scale, setting a new high-water mark in Biglaw bonus season.

Just yesterday, the firm declared that its associates would receive year-end bonuses at 150% of the typical market rate. This announcement comes on the heels of their already impressive special bonuses issued in April, which ranged from $25,000 to $60,000, predating similar moves by other major players like Milbank.

Here’s a breakdown of the new bonus structure at Wilkinson Stekloff:

- Associates from the class of 2025 will receive a total of $22,500. - The 2024 class will see $55,000, combining a $30,000 year-end with a $25,000 spring bonus. - Those from 2023 are set for a total of $75,000, with $45,000 at year-end and $30,000 in the spring. - More senior associates, from the class of 2017 and earlier, will pocket a whopping $232,500—$172,500 at year-end complemented by a $60,000 spring bonus.

This generous bonus schedule means Wilkinson Stekloff associates are earning between $1,500 and $87,500 more than their counterparts at other Biglaw firms.

Brian Stekloff, founding partner of the firm, emphasized the firm’s commitment to excellence and growth on the eve of its 10th anniversary. He praised his team's dedication to client service and their significant contributions to pro bono work, highlighting the firm’s core values and mission.

The bonuses are scheduled for distribution on December 15, with separate announcements pending for counsel bonuses.

This bold financial gesture not only highlights Wilkinson Stekloff’s robust financial health but also its dedication to rewarding the hard work and success of its associates. As Biglaw firms around the nation scramble to match or respond to this new benchmark, the legal community watches eagerly to see how this will affect associate compensation trends across the industry.
