The Post-Thanksgiving Turkey Trot: Judicial and Legal Missteps of the Year

The term "turkey" might bring to mind the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal, but in a more colloquial sense, it can also denote a major flop or failure. This year, the legal profession has witnessed its fair share of turkeys, from judges to lawyers, who have made some startling blunders.

Let's kick off with a judge from the Missouri St. Charles Circuit Court who took his love for Elvis Presley to an unprofessional level. He donned an Elvis wig and played the King's hits during court sessions, and even delved into political discussions from the bench. His antics did not amuse the Missouri Judicial Commission, which handed down a six-month unpaid suspension. Following this, he is allowed to return to the bench for 18 months before a forced resignation, marking the end of his judicial career.

Moving over to Alabama, another judicial turkey awaits sentencing after a conviction on 17 counts, including personal enrichment from his office, lying to a grand jury, and mismanaging nearly $150,000. These funds, it appears, were splurged on personal vacations and expenses. The judge's defense of "sloppy bookkeeping" during COVID-19 did little to mitigate his circumstances, showcasing a severe lapse in both ethical judgment and responsibility.

Not to be overshadowed, some members of the bar have also vied for the dubious turkey award. An alarming case from Alabama involves a lawyer accused of attempting to murder her husband, a former Auburn football player, with fentanyl on three separate occasions. Despite her role as her husband’s caregiver following his stroke, her drastic actions have led to severe legal repercussions and a stark betrayal of her professional and marital oaths.

And then there are the vigilantes of the legal world, lawyers who have taken up the mantle to police their peers, particularly around the misuse of AI in legal documents. They seek out and publicize AI-generated errors in court filings, pushing for accountability in what has been termed "AI Slop." Their work highlights the ongoing challenges and ethical considerations in integrating AI into legal practices.

As these stories unfold, they prompt us to reflect on the importance of ethical conduct and accountability in the legal profession. Missteps can lead to severe consequences, not just for the individuals involved, but for the integrity of the legal system as a whole. These turkeys, though providing some rueful entertainment, ultimately serve as a reminder of the high standards expected of those in the judiciary and legal fields.
