Since 2018, Above the Law has annually collated a list of the nation’s premier law firms based directly on feedback from the in-house attorneys who engage their services. This year’s insights come from approximately 550 in-house lawyers who have generously shared their experiences and preferences in legal outsourcing.

Our straightforward survey methodology asked in-house counsel two key questions to identify their preferred legal partners: “Which law firms does your company engage for legal services?” and “Please indicate the highest level legal work for which your company will engage the particular firm(s).” Responses were classified into four categories: cost-efficient, bulk tasks; routine matters; high-value, complex matters; and critical "bet-the-company" matters.

The results were averaged to determine the top-performing firms, which are those that consistently provide exceptional legal services across varying levels of necessity and complexity. The firms that excelled in the high-stakes, high-value categories demonstrate their capability to handle significant legal challenges, making them invaluable partners to the businesses they serve.
