In a shocking development that has rattled the legal community, Matthew Nicholas Currie, a 50-year-old former attorney with Advocates for Basic Legal Equality in Ohio, has been indicted on 91 felony counts. These charges stem from what prosecutors describe as a sinister stalking campaign targeted at a teenager and several other women.
The bulk of the charges against Currie include 40 counts of voyeurism and 49 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, complemented by two counts of unauthorized use of computer, cable, or telecommunication property. This extensive list of charges was announced after an investigation that began in earnest in October 2024.
The case unfolded when a relative of Currie discovered disturbing images on his phone, prompting immediate legal action. Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. detailed the harrowing nature of the crimes, noting that Currie had repeatedly photographed and videotaped a 17-year-old student from Oakwood High School without her knowledge, capturing images of her in various states of undress through the windows of her home.
The situation reportedly escalated when the primary victim moved to college, with Currie then turning his attention to additional women. To date, authorities have identified four victims, signaling a potentially broader scope of Currie’s illicit activities.
Oakwood Police Chief Alan Hill emphasized the gravity and complexity of the case, stating, "A 91-count indictment does not happen by accident." He lauded the diligent efforts of the investigative team and stressed the importance of accountability in such a grievous matter.
Adding a personal dimension to the case, it was noted that Currie had resigned from his position last summer following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. He is scheduled for arraignment on January 20th.
This case has sent shockwaves through the local community and the legal profession at large, highlighting severe breaches of trust and legal ethics. As the legal proceedings unfold, many will be watching closely, awaiting justice for the victims and a thorough examination of how such breaches could have occurred unnoticed for so long.
