Vermont Law Students Offer Free Tax Assistance to Low-Income Families

Law students at Vermont Law and Graduate School are stepping up for the second consecutive year to provide a much-needed service during the intimidating tax season. They are offering free tax filing assistance to Upper Valley residents earning less than $69,000 annually. This initiative not only helps demystify the tax filing process for many but also ensures that families receive every dollar of refund they're entitled to.

Pamela Cartier, involved in the program, highlighted the impact of this assistance. "A lot of people don’t know the benefits they’re entitled to," she said. Cartier shared stories of single parents walking away with significant refunds, essential for their families' upkeep, sometimes as much as $7,000 to $8,000. The relief and financial boost provided through this program can be life-changing.

The service is available until April 15th, and those eligible can schedule an appointment by contacting the school directly. This initiative not only supports the community financially but also enriches the educational experience of the law students involved, giving them a practical outlet to apply their skills in real-world scenarios.

For those residing outside of the immediate service area but still within parts of Vermont such as Randolph, Ascutney, Bradford, Lebanon, New London, Newport, White River Junction, or Woodstock, additional information is available to assist with tax filing needs.

Community outreach by law schools like this plays a pivotal role in shaping students into professionals who are ready and willing to serve and uplift their communities. It challenges the stereotype of law schools as mere stepping stones to corporate law careers and highlights their role in advocating for and protecting community interests.

If you or someone you know qualifies for this free tax assistance, reaching out could provide not just financial relief but also valuable peace of mind against the daunting task of tax filing. For further details, visit the coverage on this initiative by V News.
