When Judge Thomas L. Ludington of the Eastern District of Michigan was last in the headlines, it was due to accusations of driving with a blood alcohol concentration more than triple the legal limit. According to a police report highlighted by Bloomberg Law, Judge Ludington's attempt at a field sobriety test veered into the absurd. Tasked with reciting the alphabet from C to Q, the 72-year-old instead responded with "A, B, C, D, F, U." This dubious retort was part of a series of failed attempts to demonstrate sobriety, during which Ludington also repeatedly informed the trooper of his judicial position, perhaps in a misguided bid to sway the proceedings.

The report also notes that Judge Ludington appeared disheveled and had seemingly urinated on himself, adding to the distressing scene. Despite claiming no recollection of the crash and denying any alcohol consumption, officers reported a strong smell of alcohol.
