Last week, Vault unveiled its 2027 rankings for the best law firms to work for in America, spotlighting firms that excel not only in prestige but also in fostering quality of life for their associates. This year’s rankings come in the wake of significant political and technological shifts, including challenges to the rule of law and the rapid integration of artificial intelligence in legal practices.

Vault’s comprehensive survey, conducted between October 2025 and January 2026, asked associates to evaluate their firms across various categories such as satisfaction, firm culture, hours, compensation, and more. Interestingly, only one of the firms that ranked in the top ten for prestige also appeared in the top ten for best places to work, underscoring a potential divergence between perceived prestige and actual work-life quality.

The top ten firms, as per the rankings, saw significant movement this year, indicating changing priorities among associates. Morgan Lewis & Bockius climbed to the top spot, followed closely by O’Melveny & Myers. Other notable movers included Ropes & Gray, which soared 36 places due to its strong performance in technology and wellness initiatives.

Eric Stutzke, SVP and General Manager of Vault, highlighted the evolving landscape, noting, "We saw another close race between Morgan Lewis and O’Melveny for the Best Law Firm to Work For title. Both firms scored exceptionally well across all quality of life categories, with each taking the No. 1 or No. 2 spot in nearly every ranking."

This year’s survey also reflected a growing emphasis on technology and wellness. "The largest increases were seen in Technology and Innovation and Wellness," said Stutzke. Firms are increasingly investing in AI-powered tools and focusing on the mental and physical well-being of their associates, which may have contributed to the significant ranking changes for firms like Ropes and Gibson Dunn.
