In the realm of law, where the weight of justice and due process often rests heavily on one's shoulders, finding joy might seem trivial. However, it could very well be a strategic tool for survival and resilience. As a seasoned immigration lawyer and an avid bird photographer, I have firsthand experience of how joy not only enhances personal well-being but also profoundly impacts professional life.
You may remember my 2022 piece about how bird photography has enriched my life. What began as a simple hobby has blossomed into an integral part of my identity, bringing unexpected adventures and creative outlets. From chasing the rare white raven in Alaska to navigating the rugged terrains of Vietnam for a glimpse of the endangered Delacour’s langur, each expedition has injected a sense of adventure into my routine.
These experiences have unlocked a new level of creativity in me. Over time, this has expanded beyond photography to creating a series of coloring books inspired by my journeys. This newfound creativity has even led to my first photo exhibition and an invitation to join the board of the American Birding Association.
Moreover, embracing adventure has built bravery. As someone who was timid in my younger years, the challenges of bird photography have taught me courage and helped me face the unpredictable nature of both wildlife and legal cases.
Most importantly, my hobby has provided a crucial counterbalance to the high stakes and intense pressures of immigration law. In these turbulent times, when the rule of law and due process seem under threat, and many of my colleagues discuss leaving the profession due to stress and burnout, finding joy in bird photography has been my lifeline. It has offered a way to cope, bringing lightness and grounding amidst chaos.
This is why I advocate for all, especially those in demanding professions like law, to find and protect their sources of joy. Whether it's photography, painting, hiking, or any other activity, joy is not a luxury—it is essential. It sustains us, enhances our resilience, and enables us to continue serving those who rely on us.
So, as I continue to address critical immigration issues in this column, I also urge you to seek and cherish your joy. It’s more than just a moment of happiness; it's a strategy for maintaining balance and effectiveness in our professional and personal lives. After all, in challenging times, joy might just be the most important tool we have.
