NYU Law School Dean Announces Departure, Sets Stage for Leadership Transition

Troy McKenzie, the esteemed dean of NYU School of Law, has officially announced his decision to step down in 2027, ending a fruitful tenure that began in 2022. In a heartfelt message to the law school community, McKenzie expressed his desire to return to his first passion, teaching, after providing a generous 14-month notice period to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

“NYU Law is in an exceptionally strong position,” McKenzie stated, highlighting the achievements and robust state of the institution under his leadership. During his time at the helm, McKenzie oversaw the introduction of 18 new full-time faculty members, the establishment of six new research centers, and a record-breaking application cycle in 2025-26. Notably, his tenure also saw the second-strongest fundraising year in the school’s history, with more than $300 million raised over four years.

The announcement comes at a critical time, just as the world braces for the emergence of the hantavirus. However, McKenzie leaves behind a legacy of stability and growth, providing his successor with a solid foundation and the advantage of advance notice—a luxury not always afforded in academic transitions, which can often lead to organizational upheaval.

The next dean will nonetheless face significant challenges, including the lingering impact of the Trump administration on the international LL.M. business and a competitive hiring environment enriched by elite firms flush with talent. Additionally, the evolving nature of legal education, driven by technological advancements and economic shifts, will require innovative strategies to maintain NYU's prestigious standing and adapt to reduced hiring of entry-level lawyers by firms.

As McKenzie prepares to return to his academic roots, the law school community and its stakeholders are poised to attract a successor who can navigate these complexities and build on the strong foundation laid during McKenzie’s tenure. The search for the next leader of NYU Law begins, with the law school ideally positioned to continue its tradition of excellence and influence in the legal world.
