Davis Polk Amps Up Biglaw Talent Wars with Major Los Angeles Expansion

Davis Polk & Wardwell has launched an aggressive expansion into Los Angeles, signaling its commitment to establishing a robust, full-service office rather than just making a few high-profile hires. Just weeks after the firm announced its entry into the L.A. market, it's clear that Davis Polk is not here to play it safe.

According to a report from the American Lawyer, the firm's ambitions in Southern California are substantial. Davis Polk plans to add numerous practice groups, intensifying the competition for top-tier legal talent on the West Coast. This move comes in an already competitive lateral market, which is now set to heat up even further.

The strategy took a concrete shape with the hiring of Jason Russell, previously Skadden’s Los Angeles office leader, to oversee the new operations. Russell’s recruitment is a clear indicator that Davis Polk is looking to make a significant impact. "The office will bolster litigation," Russell mentioned, adding that their presence will also be "strong in the entertainment space, life sciences, and tech." This indicates Davis Polk's intention to penetrate nearly every lucrative sector the Los Angeles market has to offer.

Neil Barr, the firm’s chair, echoed Russell’s sentiments, emphasizing that the firm's transactional capabilities in L.A. will continue to expand. "You’ll see our corporate transactional footprint expand there as well as the sectors that Jason alluded to," Barr stated. He also hinted at being opportunistic with private equity and venture capital work.

With nearly $10 million in profits per partner, Davis Polk is in a strong position to attract and recruit top talent, leveraging its financial muscle to compete effectively in the crowded L.A. market. Barr candidly shared that expanding the firm’s geographic footprint was essential to attract a broader pool of talent, which had been previously limited.

Davis Polk’s approach to its L.A. office doesn’t just involve hiring the best lawyers available but rapidly scaling its operations to meet client needs across various sectors. "We will do what we do everywhere: Hire the best lawyers in the geography we are in," Barr confidently noted.

As Davis Polk moves forward with its ambitious plans, the Los Angeles legal scene watches closely. The firm’s aggressive expansion strategy not only highlights its commitment to establishing a significant presence in L.A. but also sets the stage for heightened competition among elite law firms on the West Coast.
