In the latest financial showdown among law firms, American Biglaw firms have yet again demonstrated their prowess in the United Kingdom, according to the newly released UK Top 50 rankings. The rankings, which detail the financial performance of the largest firms by UK revenue, show American entities increasing their dominance, growing their UK revenues at more than twice the rate of their British competitors.
The report, published by Law.com International, highlights a notable shift in the legal landscape, with 23 US-based firms making the list this year, up from 19 the previous year. These firms have recorded an average revenue growth of 14.7%, starkly outpacing the 7.1% growth rate of UK firms. Among these, twelve US-based firms achieved double-digit revenue growth, compared to just four UK-based firms.
Topping the chart, Linklaters became the first firm to cross the £1 billion threshold in UK revenue, posting an impressive 10.9% growth from the previous year and reaching £1,059,200,000 for the financial year ending 2025. This marks the third consecutive year that Linklaters has led the rankings. Close behind are A&O Shearman and Kirkland & Ellis, with revenues of £981,400,000 and £914,216,060 respectively.
Other notable mentions include Clifford Chance, Freshfields, and Latham & Watkins, all of which have showcased robust financial performances despite challenging market conditions. The list also recognizes the newly merged entity, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF Kramer), which reported revenues of £617,000,000 just before the merger.
This year's top 10 is rounded out by Slaughter and May, CMS, and Eversheds Sutherland, indicating a mix of traditional UK firms and aggressive American players who are reshaping the legal services market in the region.
