Quinn Emanuel, a prominent law firm known for its rigorous associate compensation standards, has introduced a groundbreaking update to its bonus structure, significantly enhancing the incentives for engaging in pro bono work. The firm has set a new precedent by allocating a separate 200-hour track exclusively for pro bono hours, distinct from the standard 100-hour non-billable "bucket" which traditionally included recruitment and client pitching activities.
Marc Greenwald, trial partner and head of the New York pro bono practice at Quinn Emanuel, outlined the fundamental changes. Previously, pro bono hours were lumped together with other non-billable tasks, limiting the recognition associates could receive towards their bonuses. "This change liberates pro bono from that confinement and acknowledges the full extent of our associates' contributions to public interest cases," Greenwald explained.
The firm's decision goes beyond mere structural adjustments; it reflects a deeper appreciation for the unique role pro bono work plays in both community service and lawyer development. By enabling up to 200 hours of pro bono work to count towards bonus eligibility, Quinn Emanuel not only fosters a culture of giving back but also supports its lawyers in gaining valuable courtroom experience.
Moreover, the policy includes provisions to extend the 200-hour cap in exceptional cases, a practice that was occasionally applied to the previous 100-hour bucket in unusually demanding situations. This flexible approach was notably beneficial during the intensive Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, where the firm played a critical role in addressing wrongful deportation issues under the previous U.S. administration.
In tandem with the bonus restructuring, Quinn Emanuel is also enhancing its commitment to pro bono efforts by hiring a full-time pro bono counsel. This position will ensure dedicated management and strategic development of the firm's pro bono activities, a move that Greenwald believes is essential as the firm expands. "It's about giving pro bono the attention and resources it truly deserves, ensuring we engage with the most impactful opportunities," he stated.
This strategic enhancement of pro bono bonus credits by Quinn Emanuel sets a new industry standard, positioning the firm at the forefront of a growing trend that values social impact alongside professional development. As other firms adopt various policies to encourage non-billable work that contributes to personal growth and societal benefit, Quinn Emanuel’s robust commitment to pro bono service distinctly supports both the professional growth of its associates and the broader community.
