Now this is an excellent way to keep kool this summer!
The Texas-based complex trial firm — renowned for rewarding its associates with Thanksgiving bonuses, supersized year-end payouts, and timely raises — has announced it will match the new Milbank salary scale. This adjustment will see associates enjoying an increase in their salaries ranging from $10,000 to $20,000, based on their class year, starting from $235,000 for first-years to $455,000 for those in the class of 2018 and above.
However, there is a slight twist. The salary adjustments will take effect from January 1, 2027, which is a few months behind the July 1 date when most firms adopting the Milbank scale have implemented the changes.
While the delayed implementation may not be ideal, and associates at McKool Smith will certainly feel the waiting period, the firm’s commitment to match the scale eventually is noteworthy. Especially considering that many other top law firms, often referred to as Biglaw, have been slow to react to Milbank's new salary standards. In fact, the compensation landscape has been primarily influenced by litigation boutiques this season, since Milbank first announced their updated pay scale.
In a legal marketplace where silence from many traditional Biglaw firms prevails, McKool Smith's decision to match Milbank’s scale—even on a staggered schedule—stands out as a significant move. It underscores the firm's ongoing commitment to its associates, ensuring they remain competitively compensated.
Congratulations are in order for everyone at McKool Smith as they look forward to the new year with much anticipation.
