Florida Bar Employee Suspended After Alleged Racist Threats to College Football Player

The Florida Bar, typically focused on the ethical violations of others, finds itself addressing a severe misconduct within its own ranks this week. The organization has placed Kade McLendon, a computer technician employed for approximately two years, on administrative leave amid allegations of sending racist and violent messages via Instagram to Miami Hurricanes defensive lineman Damon Wilson II.

The incident reportedly occurred after Miami's dramatic 43-35 double-overtime victory against Florida State last Saturday. According to screenshots posted by Wilson, the messages from McLendon's account included multiple uses of racial slurs, derogatory comments suggesting Wilson should be "at the back of the bus," and explicit threats of sexual violence directed at Wilson and his family. One message chillingly stated, “I am going to rape, beat and kill ur family.”

Wilson, who is black and in his first season with Miami after previous tenures at Georgia and Missouri, shared the screenshots on Sunday with the caption, “Glimpse into the life of a black student athlete.”

Responding to the situation, the Florida Bar initially noted on Monday that it had begun an internal investigation into messages "possibly sent from an employee’s social media account that contained inappropriate content." By Tuesday, the organization's stance had hardened, as it declared, “The messages in question are not only ethically and morally reprehensible but also violate our internal social media policy for employees.”

The seriousness of the allegations has led to McLendon’s social media accounts being taken offline. Attempts by The Associated Press to contact him on Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Wilson's teammates have expressed their support. Miami offensive lineman Ryan Rodriguez commented, “That’s my brother and I embrace him. It’s more than a game. That’s my brother.”

While the Florida Bar has not yet disclosed the potential disciplinary actions McLendon might face, their statement leaves little doubt about the severity with which they view the allegations. The investigation continues, highlighting the broader issues of racism and threats against athletes, resonating far beyond the sports arena into societal and workplace norms.
